Ponting and Clarke Share the Award Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Observer
Friday, 06 February 2009

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

Light seems to be emerging at the end of tunnel for Ricky Ponting. Fighting the criticism for decline in performance of Australian team under his leadership, this award has been manna from heaven. Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have been jointly nominated as the winner of Allan Border Medal for the year 2008. It has happened for the first time in history in Australia that the present captain and his deputy have shared the medal as prestigious as Allen Border Medal.

It is also portent of the things to come, by awarding Clarke along with Ponting, the Authorities at Cricket Australia are sending a clear signal that they have lots of confidence and hope in the leadership qualities of Clarke after Ponting hangs his boots, feels Cricket360.

Since its inception 10 years ago, it is one of the most coveted awards to be conferred on a player associated with Australian Cricket. The selection to this award is based on the voting done by the currently playing cricket team as also a selective group comprising of umpires and media professionals. The reference period for award were 12 test matches and 17 one-day internationals played by Australia during the last 12 months and in this voting Ponting and Clarke collected 41 votes each.

While Ponting got 22 votes from his teammates and 19 from the team of media and umpires, Clarke obtained 21 votes from his teammates, while the combined team of umpires and media gave him 20 votes. So, both of them were tied at 41 votes each. From this voting pattern, it seems to be evident that the popularity of Clarke between the umpires and the media is more, while Ponting still holds his esteem as the captain of cricket team of Australia, feels Cricket360.com.

It is the fourth time that Ponting has been conferred with this honor, previous occasions being in 2004, 2006 and in 2007. Choosing the occasion Ponting scoffed at the sinister campaign that the Australian team was on decline and pleasantly surprised exclaimed that he was of the view that either Clarke or Mitchell Johnson would be the winner this year.

Ponting was not much perturbed about the loss of the status of numero uno status for the Australian team and he had full conviction that turn around in the fortunes of the Australian tour was just around the corner.

Clarke has also won the award for the second time this year won it in 2005 as well.
