India seems to have realized the importance of having a pace battery at its disposal and with this objective one more pace academy has been launched. The difference this time around is that the academy has been launched in North of India, i.e. in the national capital, Delhi. The centre named as Gatorade Centre of Pace Excellence was put into operation on Friday. It will draw from the experience of legend of the pace bowling, Wasim Akram and one of the finest coaches in pace bowling T.A. Sekhar. They would be bringing there experience to smoothened the kinks and aberrations in the bowling performance of the players and to make them bowlers of international quality.
The days are still like that where the Indian team falls back upon the spin bowling to deliver the goods if the fast bowlers are not able to deliver. It is much improvement from a situation when players of the caliber of Gavaskar used to open the Indian bowling. Advent of Kapil Dev as a matter of fact opened up a new chapter in the Indian bowling history, and fast bowlers started making their debut. But still was in its infancy. The real turn around in the fast bowlers fortunes has been during the last three four years. But still, the moot point is, is the Indian pace bowler really fast, or is a medium pacer.
If one is talking about fast bowlers, the really fast bowler in true sense of terms in the present circumstance is only one Ishant Sharma. Munaf Patel, who used to be fast has cut down his pace, and has become a medium pacer. As a matter of fact, in the Indian conditions Ishant Sharma also seems to be gravitating towards cutting down his pace, as it was seen in the one-ff 20-20 match between India and Sri Lanka. In the second spell, he was shown bowling slow balls, and he was bowling them effectively.
So an initiative of this kind is indeed a good omen for the fate of fast bowling in India. With IPL, becoming a huge success and the need for fast bowlers always there in the offing, this centre of excellence can fulfill the need of a stock of fast bowlers. In this centre of excellence, Sekhar will be the chief coach, while Akram will take care of the tactical part. To get the academy going, a talent hunt programme was organized, and eight players have made it for the first session of this academy.
