"Like a child from a womb, like a ghost from a tomb, I arise and unbuild it again" have been written by PB Shelley about a couple of centuries ago but much of it describes one of the talismanic figures of the present day cricket administration, Jagmohan Dalmiya.
The man from the Eastern shores is referred to as the king of comebacks. 'Comeback' is a word often tagged with cricketers but here's one who brings out the essence of it. However Mr. Dalmiya is not the man of the moment but to describe Lalit Modi, a reference of Jagmohan Dalmiya seems imperative. They are perhaps the best examples of two men of similar yet opposite kinds, their story in another age would have been a favourite of Charles Dickens. Dalmiya's accession to the hungry world of cricket administration was as a result of his canny sense of business and man-management skills. So if he was the Christopher Columbus who charted ICC's future, Lalit Modi is the Michelangelo who knew the potential that lay in the heart of the game. Hence he carved out the billion dollar baby or the Indian Premier League last season. But as fate would have it, the father of the rich kid today stands the biggest test of his life. Cases of forgery have been slapped on Modi in his own state association. Once a close crony of Lalit Modi at the Rajasthan Cricket Association is now his enemy number one. The charges range from land scam to money laundering. As such Mr. Modi, with his years of experience in cricket politics is not alien to such charges. Even Jagmohan Dalmiya was expelled from the BCCI on charges of financial fraud. Lalit Modi similarly stands to lose his hold in the board if the RCA throne slips away in the elections scheduled for the weekend. True that the Indian Premier League is an independent property and he can continue to be the Chairman and Commissioner, but the BCCI tag on him may cease to exist. And much like Jagmohan Dalmiya who made enemies on route to his meteoric rise, Lalit Modi has a handful friends' list in the board. The fissures in the cricket board became all the more prominent after Sharad Pawar's powerplay ended. There are at least 3 power centres working inside the cricket board and Mr. Modi certainly is one. His rise has been celebrated and so has his fall. No one quite would understand the wily world of the willow as Jagmohan Dalmiya. He was the man who had first heard the idea of IPL from Modi way back in the nineties. And though it did not see the light if the day during his regime, Dalmiya recognised the potential in the other Marwari from the Western hub. No wonder then after months of bickering and insensitive display of crude power, both have kissed and made up. Indeed politics make strange bedfellows. Come Sunday, if Lalit Modi finds himself out of the desert, he may look for the greener Eastern pastures to stay afloat. And Jagmohan Dalmiya could very well provide him a reprieve by guaranteeing him the National Cricket Club vote. While a loss in the Rajasthan Cricket Association election could deal Modi a serious blow but his career as a cricket administrator is not coming to and end anytime soon. He may well make a comeback with the blessings of the former ICC president. Many have referred him as Chota Dalmiya in the past. But perhaps to be called Chota Dalmiya, Lalit Modi has to be ready to become a man of many comebacks.
