Better Late Than Never: ICC Hall of Fame Caps for Windies Legends Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Observer

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

It may have come at an opportune time and it would deflect the criticism that West Indies board might have drawn from the status of pitch in Antigua by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Three of the legends of West Indies who rewrote the manner in which cricket was played, and literally created a persona of awe around them were honored by the ICC with Cricket Hall of Fame Caps.

Sir Vivian Richards must be mollified to an extent, as the tarnish that his name suffered on account of the bad condition of pitch in Antigua (the stadium is named after him), as ICC has honored him with the Cricket Hall of Fame Caps. His other two contemporaries and team mates also have been awarded the same cap, they being Andy Roberts and Michael Holding.

Viv RichardsAfter being presented with this cap, they have the place of pride in the exalted honor list of the world governing body along with the other cricketers. The honors on this occasion was done by the West Indies Cricket Board President Dr Julian Hunte on the field of play during the lunch interval on day two of the third Test between the hosts and England at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

The occasion must have bought nostalgic memory for Vivian Richards as this was the ground where he made the fastest hundred in Test history, achieving the feat in just 56 balls against England in 1986. For Richards this recognition was a matter of pride as though he was a legend in the West Indies cricket, being recognized the same by the ICC added to the stature. The other two compatriots, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding are the mates with whom he has been in fabulous relationship either taking catch on their bowling or batting along with them when the occasion demanded.

HoldingAndy RobertsFor Michael Holding, this was the best birthday gift that he could receive; he turned 55 on the occasion. He was of the view that when began a cricketing career, this was not what one aspired for, but when one has hung the boots and then this honor comes, it indeed is sweet as it is reward for the sweat and grime that was on display in the field till he had the cherry in his hands. Incidentally, he is the only player who has turned into a successful cricket commentator in the cricketing arena, and he brings the same leisure that defined his bowling, a kind of a pause before the delivery.

West Indies greats Vivian Richards, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding were on Tuesday presented the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame caps to formally induct them into the exalted honor list of the world governing body.
