Samajwadi Party or CPIM, West Bengal or Uttar Pradesh---the nation broke into speculation after Dona Ganguly disclosed that dada was being wooed by one of the UP leaders for contesting the upcoming Loksabha election on Samajwadi Party ticket.

This time Sourav himself had little to do with this cricket controversy ; it was his better half who invited trouble for him by informing the media that his husband has been offered to contest election for Samajwadi party and that is from Uttar Pradesh. An acclaimed Odissi dancer, Dona was in Allahabad to attain a cultural fest, and when she was attending a dance program in Lucknow, she was approached by a political leader from UP who offered a party ticket for her husband.

His wife thinks he has all in himself to make it big in politics, but the mega star of international cricket maintains he is not good enough to give politics a go. But in any case, dada makes it clear that if he ever considers joining politics; west Bengal will be his launching pad, not any other state of India. This declaration is seemingly a breather for Bengal’s ruling party, which would just love to offer him a poll ticket.

However, Samajwadi general secretary Amar Singh too was grilled by the media on the issue, but he did not confirm anything. The SP top notch was reported to inform media, “Nobody from our side has officially gone to Dona Ganguly. If someone went on our behalf, I don’t know about it,” PTI quoted him as saying. “But if Sourav Ganguly wants to join the SP, we will consider ourselves lucky.” However, the insiders of the Samajwadi Party are aware that that an MLA, reportedly an Amar Singh ally, had indeed approached Dona. The sources also informed media that the party high command nurtures a wish to field the former Indian skipper from Varanasi, a city where the Bengali population is second largest.

Dona Ganguly clearly nurtures some political aspiration for her husband, though she makes it clear that she doesn’t want to impose anything on his man. But Sourav, who has just retired from the international cricket and leads the Knight Riders team in IPL, is reluctant about politics at least at this moment. It is to be seen, whether Sourav gives in to his wife’s wishes and joins the Communist part in his home state. A nod in affirmation from Sourav will be like huge sixer  in the kitty of  the West Bengal’s  ruling party, in reply of the Mamata bouncers, which Buddha led government has been finding too harsh to play in the recent times.

SP Gupta  - Indian/International Politics need Good Personalit   |2009-02-18 19:56:13
I should not mean Sourav Ganguly, but Politics especially Indian Politics need
good and talented youth who can really contribute and win over evil and lead
from the forefront.
Neetu Vohra  - Does ganguly have it in him??   |2009-02-18 16:05:24
Is ganguly really meant for politics though he was one of the most successful
captain of India that we have to see. As per my opinion why to contest elections
from up i think Bengal will be a nice place to launch his politics as a
profession
