The man with the responsibility of giving the team a good start is going to receive the prestigious Polly Umrigar award today. But for him nothing has changed.
On the eve of upcoming cricket series against New Zealand, opponent’s leader takes the special note of this man, Sehwag. Vettori was quoted saying, “Dhoni and Sehwag batting on the little grounds in New Zealand is pretty scary.” With an immense hands and eye coordination and mastering of a range of strokes, Virender Sehwag can indeed be a man to be feared on his day. But it is the simple style of his playing that distinguishes him from the other players in the arena of international cricket. And this is a trait which has not been changed since he started his career years ago. As the player points out, ““I see no reason to change,”. His view is supported by another veteran, Kapil Dev who was reported to say, ““Why should he change? His natural game is his strength”. “Sehwag’s attitude towards the game is his strong point. He is the same as he looked when he started. Most batsmen change with age… Don Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar, Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar all experienced changes with age. But not Sehwag”…Kapil showers compliments on this batsman, who is definitely going to make it harder for the opponents when he tours New Zealand. Sehwag in the recent past spoke about his grievances against the former coach, who made an attempt to change his batting style. But in all praise for the India’s new coach and the captain, he seems to be thankful for getting the chance of pursuing his own style. A great believer in the power of Yoga, Sehwag goes for proper training on a regular basis. In addition to that, India’s opener believes in the trick of conserving energy for bigger situation. So far as the upcoming cricket tour of New Zealand is concerned, he claims he has not set any individual goal for himself. He rather has a collective goal and wants to share his New Zealand experiences with the junior team members. “This is a team sport and individuals only contribute to make it a collective success,” maintains Viru, who too failed in the two Tests on India’s last tour of New Zealand. However, on personal front he more than compensated it by hitting two ODI centuries. This time, India’s opener believes that the team has all the right potentials to beat the Black Caps.
