Even as the Australian National Cricket Team are preparing themselves for what will undoubtedly be a grueling tour in South Africa, what may also be playing upon the minds of some of the players is the upcoming Indian Premier League Series. According to recent cricket news, there is a strong doubt about Ricky Ponting and David Hussey being able to play this year’s IPL fixtures. The two Aussies, who are part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, (Shahrukh Khan’s team) are a question mark for the IPL this year.
The cause for concern is the schedule of play that has been fixed of the Australian team, which is unlikely to release the Aussies for the Indian Premier League before the second week of May. The present tour of South Africa will extend up till 17 April and then reportedly the Aussies are required to tour Dubai where they will play Pakistan. This series is will go on till 10 May. The final of the IPL is on the 24th of May; you can do the math and see how difficult it would be for the Aussies to make an appearance. An official of the team management of the KKR was reported as having said, “We are not releasing Ricky Ponting, but may not be able to avail of his services for the second season. Coming all the way for five matches and not be assured of a place in the XI is not something he would fancy.” He added, “We have three potent T20 batsmen in Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum and Aussie Moses Henriques,’’ so perhaps it may well be that the absence of the Aussies may not be an overwhelming loss to the team.Earlier Ponting was reportedly examining the Indian Premier League schedule which would come after 8 months of constant international cricket being played by the Aussies. "We might only be able to play the last two weeks and a lot of the franchises we play for might have no chance of making the finals. There are all those sorts of things that need to be taken into consideration and worked out between the player and the franchises I guess," he had said.
