If there is one game that can engage the viewers interest at the international level, cricket is the game, as it is the game which has acquired the cult following and it can be found being played from the deserts, to the banks or rivers and atop the inhospitable mountains. So, as a fitting tribute to the passion that people of the eight countries that comprise the members of South Asian games have decided to allow cricket to make its debut in next year's South Asian Games to be staged in Dhaka.
What could not be achieved in Common Wealth games seems now to be a distinct possibility in the South Asian Games. The next South Asian Games that would make its debut in 2010 from Jan. 29 to Feb.9 would feature a 20-20 competition for those who are below 21 years of age. It seems to be an after effect of the success that IPL and ICL has made in the sub-continent as also the manner in which it has caught the imagination of the people in all these countries. The member countries of SAF games are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In effect it would be a match between the cricket playing nations India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka along with the host Bangladesh. Among other four nations, cricket finds some expression in Afghanistan and Nepal while there is not much a reference about cricket being played at either professional or amateur level in Maldives or Bhutan. Though the games were started in 1984 in Nepal, it is now in the 25 year of the games that cricket would make its debut and it could be a perfect silver jubilee gift for the patrons and promoters. It is owing to the fact that the scheduling of cricket would bring in some sponsors and it would be a facilitation to offset the administrative expenses incurred in running, hosting and organizing the games. It could also provide the platform for Pakistan to test out some new players in the game and bred them to do the national duty, if they do not lift the ban from the players who have played in the ICL in India. For Sri Lanka as well, it could be a good platform to test out new bunch of players and for the host Bangladesh it would be a further addition to its stature as a cricketing nation. It is owing to the fact that by the time the game would begin, Mustafa, the player from Bangladesh who has been made a member of Kolkata Night Riders would have able to make some impression.
