Hayden’s Proper Farewell a Month after Retirement Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Observer
Thursday, 19 February 2009

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

When Matthew Hayden announced his retirement last month, there had been no opportunity to bid the big man a big farewell. Now however the ideal opportunity to bid Hayden farewell comes up in the form of the Twenty20 extravaganza at the SCG to raise funds for the Bushfires Appeal which will feature past greats like Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor and Glenn McGrath among others.

Aussie batting giant Matthew Hayden had announced his retirement (announced his retirement - http://www.cricket360.com/843-matthew-hayden-calls-it-a-day.html) last month, suddenly and rather unceremoniously. He announced his retirement in the cricket news, at a time when the cricketing world did not expect it. Also when he played the final test against the South African at the Sydney Cricket Ground one did not know that this would be his final innings. The way that he announced his retirement did not make it possible for his team mates and his fans to give him the kind of farewell that he deserved; the kind that is deserved by a player of his calibre. He deserved to go out in a blaze of glory, honoured by his team mates and the crowd alike.

Since that did not happen then, it will happen now according to the recent cricket news; a month after the actual retirement. Hayden will play one more innings, this time for a good cause: Hayden will be playing the Twenty20 extravaganza at the SCG to raise funds for the Bushfires Appeal. This fund raiser match will feature past greats like Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor and Glenn McGrath among others.

It is being called Australia's Big Bash a T20 match in which Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh will be opposing captains. The tickets to the event are selling like hot cakes and organisers are hoping to raise more than $500,000 for the aid of those devastated by the destructive bushfires that have brought devastation to Victoria. The amount will go to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal, with SCG staff donating their services. The Twenty20 match, to be staged by the SCG Trust in partnership with Cricket Australia and will be held on Sunday 22 February 2009.

Earlier Hayden’s sudden decision to quit came as a complete surprise to many who believed that he would carry on till the Ashes later this year. However Hayden decided that his recent poor form and inability to get the big scores was reason enough to hang up his boots.

This will give Hayden the chance to say his last farewell before a packed house this Sunday and his mates a chance to bid him a proper and honorable farewell.
