It is rare that one gets to glimpse the man behind the cricketer that is Sachin Tendulkar, and in a freewheeling interview with a popular journal, we got a taste of just that. Sachin, who is usually an extremely private individual, revealed details that made instant headlines in the cricket news.
Sachin was reported in the cricket news as saying that there were good and bad points about being famous and adored by millions. While he get uncomfortable with receiving letters written in blood and people coming up to him, touching his feet and telling him he is God, he does admit that being a famous international cricketer has had its many plus points. "I used to receive letters written in blood...but not anymore. It feels strange when a fan comes and touches your feet and says you are God. I don't feel comfortable with it, but it is the way they feel about you...that happened again just a couple of weeks ago actually," he said. Where being a famous cricketer has helped out is when according to him, "We were to fly from Sydney to Melbourne -- we had no tickets, no passports, nothing. I got to the counter at the airport and explained the situation. The guy at the counter recognised me and he gave us three boarding passes from Sydney to Melbourne...without passports, without tickets. I felt that I was truly special." Though Tendulkar has no immediate plans to retire from international cricket, he does envisage a time that happens when he will be connected with cricket in some capacity, perhaps by way of some business. One of the many demerits of being the iconic star he is, that though he has a Ferrari, he has not been able drive it in a year! Also private family moments without cricket interfering are few and far between, such as when "On December 31 last year. I spent time with my family in Mussoorie about 7,000 feet above sea level looking at the snow-capped mountains. It was freezing and we went for a long walk. I was a fantastic feeling. That was the day when I didn't watch sports at all."Sachin also went on to talk about playing pranks on his teams mates, such as the time Yuvraj was fooled, and about how criticism from the media is something he ignores since it is rarely creative. He then talked about cricket moments that he is proud of and not so proud of. While he is proud of the teams’ performance in the Chennai test when they defeated England, he is not so proud of his last test at Mohali. A rare light moment with a Maestro who is still so committed to cricket that it is only cricket that earns his full focus right now!
