Every now and then a voice is heard, an opinion is expressed that MS Dhoni is not in the true sense the wicketkeeper. The opinions expressed are accorded a mileage and then the issue dies down. But when Syed Kirmani says so, then does it mean that it needs to be introspected, or is it owing to the fact that now Kiri, as he is popularly called, also wishes to rake a controversy.
MS Dhoni has emerged as one of the most successful wicket keeping captains in the cricketing history. He is also a binding force which has welded the Indian cricket team into a well-oiled and cohesive team. In such a scenario, when there is no blemish in his personality, and there have been no questions raised about his competence in his vocation, when Syed Kirmani utters the view that Dhoni does not know how to keep the wickets, as per the conventional definition related to art of wicket keeping. Kirmani's argument is based on the premise that there is certain slackness in the approach of wicket keeping by Dhoni. Is it so? Kirmani says that it is probably owing to the fact that Dhoni is playing all kinds of cricket and therefore in trying to adjust to one form and then the other there is a certain amount of technical blemish creeping in, in his wicket keeping. The problem in this issue is that when the players of the past question the craft of the trade, in which they excel, they forget that the times and tides have changed. In their times the numbers of matches that they have played in their lifetime, the players of today do it within three years. There is so much of exposure, and there also is so much of competition that you have to be at the cutting edge in all the departments to be one up on competition. Another facet is that during the times of Kirmani there hardly was any instant cricket, while in the present times, the instant cricket dominates, with a sprinkling of test matches. In the test matches you get ample time to hone your craft, but in the instant variety of cricket, you do not have the luxury of time to improvise on your performance. With such a handicap, if you are still able to keep up your performance percentile to a certain acceptable degree, then there should not be a cause for qualm. After all, the results are being delivered.
