One more sports person, to be specific a cricket, former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin has succumbed to the charms of the politics and decided to test the waters. The party chosen by him to do the same is the Congress party. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Veerrappa Moily formally inducted him as a primary member of the Congress Party. His name had come into reckoning as a political candidate for quite some time and he had visited even the Dargah of Ajmer Sharif for fulfilling his political goal.
The element of novelty continues to persuade the political parties to look for celebrities from all walks of life, the main objective being to increase the win-ability quotient, it being derived from the novelty associated with the persona. So before the elections for the current year were announced; sensing the mood of the public Azharuddin has jumped into the fray and has joined the Congress party to pursue his political career. The constituency, from which Azharuddin would stand, however is still undecided. Though a taint of match fixing continues to dog his name, the Congress party is of the view that thee is no criminal case against him. If a case does exist, it is between him and the BCCI, and to clear his name Azhar has already filed a petition seeking revocation of ban against him. The implied meaning from this statement is that Azhar has taken all possible steps from his side to get his name cleared, but if the other party is not taking an initiative, it is a problem area with the other party, i.e. BCCI. The market was rife with the rumour that Azhar would be joining a political party since January 20. According to Azhar he joined Congress, as the leadership of Sonia Gandhi impressed him. Based on a meeting that he had with K Chandrasekhar Rao the Telangana Rastra Samiti President, market was rife that he may choose to go with Telangana Rastra Samiti. There was speculation that Azhar may get his involved in the election for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls. Azhar nipped these speculations in the bud by issuing the statement that he was mainly concerned about promoting the cause of cricket and nothing else mattered to him. In his test career, Azhar scored a total of 22 centuries at an average of 45, and 7 centuries in ODI's at an average of 37. He scored a century in each of his first three Tests, which is a record, yet to be broken. He won 103 ODI matches as the captain of the Indian team, which is still an Indian record. An exceptional fielder, he took a world record 156 catches in ODI cricket. In 1991 he was named ''Wisden Cricketer of the Year''.
