While there is no official confirmation about the problems in payments in the Indian Cricket League, ICL, it has started getting confirmation from other sources. The speculation was always there when the authorities postponed the March chapter of the ICL and the reason given was that the players from Pakistan are not available so it has been cancelled.
So it is sort of getting confirmed. The Sydney Morning Herald has confirmed that the players from Australia, which were playing in the ICL, have not received their remuneration for the last tournament in which they played. As per the newspaper the players have not been paid their salary for the month of the December, and the players include Australians Jason Gillespie, Damien Martyn, Michael Kasprowicz, Jimmy Maher, Ian Harvey and Stuart Law. The amount of payment involved in some cases goes up to $100,000. Players like Jason Gillespie, Damien Martyn, Michael Kasprowicz, Jimmy Maher, Ian Harvey and Stuart Law, receive quarterly payments of up to $105,000 for the top-paid stars. Silver lining in whole of the affair, as per the report of the newspaper is that none of the players has a doubt about the longevity of the league, or that it would be stopped. If the players were having this kind of confidence, in the tournament then the organizers would draw definite strength from this and should be able to pull it off, i.e. be able to solve the payment related issue. A player went on record to inform that there payments were rarely on time, so the delay this time around is nothing that should perturb them. But it is a loaded statement as the next quote is “It is India", and if such a statement were made, then the ICL would have to think seriously about it. It is because the reputation of the country would be at stake and it could severely dent the image of India as an emerging power in the world of cricket. The player has however qualified his statement that it owing to the economic crisis that the whole world is facing, and therefore it should not be much of a worry. Owner of ICL, it has been learned, has sent personal letters to all the players, requesting them to be and that there payments would be made. Authorities at ICL however need to take urgent action, or else it would be difficult for them to hire foreign players to play in the league.
