One more time, domestic cricket in India is being made to pay the price for more high profile international cricket; this time the Indian Premier League (IPL). The breaking cricket news has it that there will be no domestic or National Twenty20 championships held this year. When asked to cite a reason for this, the BCCI said only and rather lamely that it was owing to a ‘cramped schedule’. The cramped schedule referred to is merely concern for the Indian Premier League time table; so that the different teams have sufficient time to hold training camps prior to the commencement of the IPL tournament.
So it would seem that domestic cricket will once again be sacrificed at the altar of international cricket or as in this case big business because that is what the IPL undoubtedly is! India may be the currently reigning T20 world champions, but won't be having their own national domestic championship simply because the BCCI seems to have given in to the demand of the Indian Premier League teams seeking time to prepare for their event. The national T20 event was tentatively scheduled from March 22 to April 6, which would have clashed with the 15 day training camps that most IPL teams are planning to hold. And IPL officials have admitted as much; that it is at their behest that the BCCI put on hold the domestic championship which will now be held at the beginning of the next domestic season. “…given that we are spending so much money isn't it natural that we, would want to prepare more thoroughly?” was the Indian Premier League stand. BBCI on the other hand has no reply to the question why domestic players would have to sacrifice their chance at playing the tournament. So while the current T20 champs India may have decided to dispense with the tournament as superfluous, other countries seem to take their T20 more seriously; most have a system in place for organising T20 tournaments: GLOBAL T20 LEAGUES AUSTRALIA KFC T20: Big Bash Started in 2005, the tournament under the aegis of Cricket Australia has six Australian states. They play five matches each. ENGLAND Twenty20 Cup: The creator of domestic T20 format, the tournament was a huge success after its advent in 2003 and has a participation of 18 county teams. SRI LANKA Inter-Provincial Twenty20: The T20 domestic competition is held by Sri Lanka Cricket and is part of its inter-provincial tournament programme. The tournament has six teams. PAKISTAN RBS Twenty20 Cup: With the participation of as many as 13 teams, the domestic T20 cup has been a huge success. SOUTH AFRICA Standard Bank Pro 20 Series: The domestic tournament was first played in the 2003/04 season with a participation of six teams. In 2007, Zimbabwe also participated as the seventh team. NEW ZEALAND State Twenty20: The league was started in 2006 and has a participation of six teams.
