When Kunal Dasgupta put in his papers as a head of Sony television, the market was rife with the rumor that he was forced to do so owing to the controversy between Sony and Big TV on the issue of telecast of the matches. Lalit Modi, the Commissioner of the Indian Premier League has however out rightly rejected the rumors as figment of imagination and informed that there was none of the partners were ditching the IPL bandwagon.
Has IPL become so big that it is getting mired in one controversy or the other on a daily basis? If the market rumors are to be believed it indeed has. For example the resignation of Kunal Dasgupta as the CEO of Sony Entertainment Television is being attributed to the state of confusion over telecast rights of the Indian Premier League Season 2 matches. Some observers opine that it is direct fallout of the controversy related to BIG TV deciding to call it quits as far as broadcasting of the IPL matches through its DTH network is concerned. But Lalit Modi has denied all the rumors. He has issued the clarification that neither the global media rights holder nor other partners are ditching the Indian Premier League (IPL). He informed that all the partners including, Sony Television/ World Sport Group (WSG) continue to be associated with the IPL. As a matter of fact they have already paid whatever money they were committed to, underlined Modi. He further waxed that not a single partner has defaulted and they have received hundreds of payments. Commenting on the controversy brewing at Sony television Modi opined that the IPL is a jewel in the crown of Sony Television; it’s a top cricket property for the broadcaster. For Modi it was a personal loss that Kunal Dasgupta had quit the company as CEO. Modi informed that Dasgupta was enamored of the concept of IPL and was the architect of developing the property for Sony. Last year Sony/ WSG had won the Indian Premier League media rights for $1.026 billion for a 10-year period, with $108 million pared for promotional activities. IPL’s other partners are DLF (title sponsor for the first five years at $50 million), Hero Honda (associate sponsor at $22.5 million for the first five years), PepsiCo (pouring partner for the first five years at $12.5 million), Kingfisher Airlines (umpires’ partner for the first five years at $26.5 million) and Vodafone Essar (telecom partner for the first five years at $25 million). Citi Bank is the official banking partner.
