Aussie Media Lauds Ponting ‘Sacrifice’ Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Observer

A lot of column inches and cyber space of the cricket news has recently been devoted to Ricky Ponting and his fate as regards the Indian premier league (IPL). Former captain Steve Waugh has come out in support of the present captain as a sign of a selfless sign of putting country before money making. Laudable indeed and now the Australian media are falling over themselves to pat skipper Ponting on his back for resisting the lure of the filthy lucre. The Aussie Media has hailed this decision as ‘Smart’ and ‘brave’.

One Aussie Publication dealing with cricket news said, "The decision by the skipper to spend two weeks at home with his family rather than dashing for the Indian Premier League cash is a smart move. Ponting's move is brave and bold and will silence the critics, but more importantly it will give him the sort of rest he needs before the Ashes and the Twenty20 World Cup."

Ponting himself was quoted in the cricket news as saying, "My country comes first and there was no way I could give my all for Australia if I used the only two-week break we have to go and play in India” Sources however suggest otherwise, that more personal reasons of friction between Ponting and KKR captain Sourav Ganguly and perhaps a reluctance on part of Ponting the skipper to take directions from someone else may be part of the reason.

There is a popular perception in the Aussie media that the inaugural edition of the IPL has affected many Australian players and so skipping the Twenty20 event will save the cricketers from unnecessary injuries and prolong their career. The publication was also quoted as having opined that "The players are in the middle of the most grueling 18 months of cricket ever endured. Two weeks in the IPL may not seem much, but it is a game that places a lot of strain on tired bodies and a lot of the players who competed last year came home with injuries. Matthew Hayden never got his career back on track, Andrew Symonds' knee continues to trouble him and Brett Lee eventually broke down."

Well that is rather a lot of blame to lay at the door of the IPL, however the Aussie media is convinced that the Indian Premier League is not a good idea! IPL Chairman, Lalit Modi has gone on record to say that Ponting will not be missed, "The pulling out of one or two players will not affect the Indian Premier League which is much bigger. The players are also chosen by the teams based on their FTP (Future Tours Programme of the International Cricket Council) commitments."

KKR  - Ponting will not earn much anyway   |2009-02-24 07:32:12
If you calculate Ponting's earning potential in 2 weeks, you can see that it is
well under $66K. This figure does not include tax cuts and other expenses. In
hindsight, its obvious Ponting is not happy with his salary from KKR. If he is
only getting 30-40K for the 2 weeks, why play??
