Herschelle Gibbs, nick named as “Gibbsy”, the 34 year dashing right-handed opener of South Africa is playing the county cricket this summer from the county, Glamorgan.
As always the expectations are very high from him from all his fans and his team Glamorgan Dragons. In his first knock in the county cricket, Gibbs hit 43 runs from just 35 balls including 4 fours against the Somerset Sabres. He was the top scorer for the team and played very important part in the victory of Glamorgan Dragons. Now the question is why Herschelle Gibbs is a dangerous player for the opposition? Herschelle Gibbs is an amazing talent. Born on 23rd February 1974 at Green Point, Cape Town, Gibbs made his first-class debut at the age of 16 for Western Province. But he had to wait for 6 years to play for South Africa. This right-handed batsman is a lethal combination of aggressive and exciting batting and superb fielding. He is a major contributor of South African top order in recent years. He has firmly established himself at top South Africa’s batting order. There is no shot in the book that he can’t play. He has an excellent hand-eye co-ordination. The speed of his hands is magnetic, which frequently allows him to hook off the front foot. His trademark shot is the lofted extra-cover drive; hit inside out with the certainty of a square cut. At backward point, he really is the Next Jonty Rhodes. His best innings is a 111 ball 175 against the world champions Australia in a record-breaking one-day contest at Johannesburg where South Africa had chased down an impossible 434 runs in 49.5 overs. During a World Cup game against Netherlands, Gibbs smashed six sixes off Dan van Bunge's fourth over. It is also a world record for international matches. And just look at his stats. In tests he has 6167 runs in 90 matches with an average of 41.95 with 14 hundreds. In ODIs, he has 7453 runs in 227 matches including 20 hundreds. Why he is so dangerous? Well, the record says it all. WATCH OUT FOR GIBBSY IN ENGLAND.
