The man who made T-20 popular on Indian television screen is no longer there to take it to another height through the upcoming T-20 cricket tournament this season; he is busy planning his new project on 3-G players. A report on the exit of Kunal Dasgupta: a well known personality in international cricket circuit.
Nobody knows whether it is the falling revenue of SET or the row with BCCI over the Big TV issue, but the mastermind of T-20 popularization on Indian Television screen had to quit. The world of cricket will be thankful to the man for his sheer insight. The Twenty-20 concept was new to the media; but the person who could well envisage its huge potentials was Kunal Dasgupta, then the CEO of SET. For the man famous for taking big risks, decision for the airing of IPL T-20 was yet another risk, but he came out victorious after IPL was concluded amidst huge fanfare. A Kolkata IIM alumnus, Kunal Dasgupta has remained the most successful deal maker for Sony for fourteen long years. The Mandira Bedi element that added a zing to the airing of the cricket world cup was his brain child too. Everybody scoffed at it first, but when it clicked off hugely, everybody had to admit that glamour and cricket has to go hands in hand for Indian television. Despite being a successful strategist and deal maker for his organization, he has been subject to criticism for his deals in cricket or in films. It is not unknown him though. “You will always hear whispers wherever there is a deal. I wouldn’t have lasted in Sony this long if it was an issue,” he says. Apart from the Sony-BCCI dispute, his Rs 100 crore deal with Colors channel also created immense media buzz in the recent times. The second IPL is not far away and it has proved once again cricket means big business in sub continent. It even causes breaking out of corporate warfare and triggers off dramatic exit of corporate honchos. During his stint with SET, Kunal Dasgupta has perfected the art of exploiting South Asia’s passion for cricket. He took the risk and for him last year’s Indian Premier League proved lucky. The Sony has to do without him now. It is still not clear, whether Sony will continue to have the IPL rights. Be it Sony or on any other channel, when we watch the upcoming IPL cricket , we would definitely remember the great visionary who introduced IPL to the millions of television viewer in India and abroad.
