India seems to be taking its role as the elder brother in the sub-continent rather seriously. Therefore, it has decided to build a stadium in Sri Lanka. It could be a noble gesture towards the cause of cricket, and could be a great help for the cause of cricket World Cup 2011.
The cash rich BCCI one of the richest cricket boards in the world has decided to part with a part of the money from the coffers to build a cricket stadium in Sri Lanka. This stadium would be used for hosting couple of 2011 World Cup matches. This stadium is going to be built up in Sri Lanka’s southern Hambantota district, where the authorities expect to host at least a couple of 2011 World Cup matches. According to the Competent Authority of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) S. Liyanagama, the Hambantota International Cricket Stadium would initially be introduced to the ICC list as an alternate venue but will subsequently be named as one of the main venues to host World Cup matches to be played in Sri Lanka in February 2011. The construction work on the new stadium is expected to begin by the end of March. The major portion of the financing for this project will come from India and the initial corpus would be chipped in by the Sri Lanka Cricket authorities. It would be first instance of a kind, where to promote the cause of cricket a neighboring nation is helping in building a cricket stadium. Of the 15 World Cup venues, eight would be in India, four in Pakistan, two in Sri Lanka and one in Bangladesh. The interesting aspect that could be worth observing in the near future would be, whether this stadium can also be used for hosting the IPL matches of Chennai Super Kings. After all one of the super stars of Sri Lanka is a key player in the Chennai Super Kings, and if the matches are played in Sri Lanka, it would be a great boost to the game, and the revenue also would be enhances, as Sri Lanka is one of the most receptive nations to the cause of cricket. One does not know, may be BCCI could have this aspect in the mind as well, and the Sri Lankan authorities could also be seeing it as a money spinner in the near future, but for the present the cards are being kept close to the chest. IPL after all is thinking about hosting matches in Bangladesh then the same can be thought about for Sri Lanka as well.
