It is becoming more of an enigma. The confusion and the dispute between the n Cricket League (ICL), and the Indian Premium League (IPL) does not seem to get reconciled, even though International Cricket Council (ICC), tried to discuss the issue with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to arrive at an amicable solution.
Though, ICC convened a three-hour meeting to arrive at some kind of a solution for the dispute between ICL and IPL, nothing concrete emerged. It was evident from the statement issued by ICC following a three-hour meeting. There does not seem to be a hope for its earlier resolution as no follow-up meeting has been planned. The next stage in the matter would be consideration of an ICL application to be recognized by the ICC as an unofficial competition that would be put up before the ICC Board at its meeting in Dubai in April. Issuing a statement after completion of the meeting, ICC president David Morgan informed that he was grateful to all parties for coming together with the best of intentions and the discussions took place in a friendly and cordial manner but, unfortunately, no successful conclusion could arise from the discussions. He also declined to make any further comments. Morgan informed that he had convened the meeting between the officials from the ICL and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as he considered it a priority to resolve the issue. He informed that the maximum probability of a dispute getting resolved happens when the involved parties sit across the table and thrash out the issues. The earlier attempt to have some kind of a solution also failed and it was the second time a meeting between the rival Indian organisations ended in deadlock following unsuccessful talks in India last December. The Johannesburg meeting was attended by Morgan, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, BCCI honorary secretary N Srinivasan, media mogul and ICL founder Subhash Chandra and ICL business head Himanshu Modi. ICL was brought into being in 2007 by Subhash Chandra as he was also desirous of telecasting cricket matches through his television network as well, and he was not getting any official tournaments being telecast from his channel. So, to join the party, he decided to launch his own league. His initiatives, however, ran into fierce opposition from the official body. Players from the ICL are effectively banned from playing for their countries, while English county teams that field ICL players cannot play in the Champions League for top teams from national Twenty20 competitions, including the IPL.
