Another familiar face in the world of cricket, an umpire by the name of Steve Bucknor would not be there to do the duty. He has announced that he would hang his boots after March 2009. The last test match that he would be standing in as an umpire would be in the third test between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town from March 19th
Though it would be a great loss to the World of cricket Indians would definitely heave a sigh of relief, the Indian crickets at least, as Steve Bucknor has decided to hang his boots. His decisions at various times have been against India and because of his decisions he has led to many snafus that have cost India dearly. It indeed would be an interesting repose to him to enquire why and how the decisions that he took, the wrong ones especially, were heavily loaded against India and it was not so with the other cricket playing countries. It was because of his controversial decisions that a serious impasse had been created in the ICC and he became the first umpire in the history of cricket in all probability that had to be replaced midway in a series after BCCI took a stand that it would not allow its players to play if he stood as umpire. This was based on the report that was submitted by the captain of India Anil Kumble to BCCI. He was controversially replaced by the International Cricket Council with Billy Bowden for the third Test between India and Australia. The replacement came because Indians claimed he made two mistakes during the test match that caused the Indian side to lose to Australia. Bucknor has officiated in a record 126 Tests, stood in 179 one-day internationals - including five consecutive World Cups - and was the first umpire to officiate in 100 Tests.Bucknor's first international cricket fixture was a One Day International (ODI) between the West Indies and India at Antigua on March 18, 1989. His first Test match was at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica, between April 28 and May 3, 1989, with the competing teams again being the West Indies and India. After umpiring in a few international matches, he was selected to umpire at the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Australia, and went on to stand in the final despite being quite inexperienced. Bucknor also stood in the next four World Cup finals in 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2007, with the 2007 World Cup taking place in his native West Indies.
