Andrew Flintoff may have to Skip IPL feels ECB Print E-mail

His injuries may assume a different proposition. Andrew Flintoff who is not playing in the third test match between England and West Indies is probably doing it so that he can save himself for playing in the second season of the Indian Premier League beginning in April. The thought operating at the back of his mind at the subconscious level would be the fact that he is one of the costliest players this season and he needs to justify that if he has to maintain a long term relationship with IPL. But the ECB may be having a different opinion.

Is ECB getting inspiration from the decision taken by Ricky Ponting not to play in IPL as he wants rest and to prepare himself and devote himself to the cause of the nation rather than playing in the professional tournament for money. If the indications are available, it seems to be like that. They are giving it a thought that Flintoff may not be allowed to participate in the Indian Premier League, though he is the costliest player of the seasons. The reason for development of this view is on account of the injury that Flintoff has developed and it has scared the ECB it seems. He is after all their mains tar and if he is no match fit for Ashes, then it would be a monumental blow to ECB.

Ricky Ponting however has already pocketed money from one season from IPL, and ECB should keep this in mind, while Flintoff is going to play in the first season of the Indian Premier League. Besides, only by not playing in the IPL can Flintoff not avoid getting injured. The itinerary of the players is such that it is so jam packed that the players are bound to suffer injuries. The boards of cricket of respective countries want to pack as many matches as possible so that they can fill their coffers, both by way of telecast as also by other incomes. So, if they are really concerned about the welfare of the players, in their annual tourney sufficient provision should be allowed for holidays which are not there at all.

Every player is a professional and with the major part of the cricketing life being hampered by injured he tries to maximize the revenue that he can for himself. Boards do not compensate for the time when the player is laid off as the remuneration only comes when the player plays the match.
