The lady luck seems to be smiling on Lalit Modi, the In-Charge of Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been granted an interim bail by a session’s judge on Tuesday. It would be in operation for a period of four-weeks, and is called as transit anticipatory bail granted at the cost of Rs.20000. The case involves cheating and forgery and was lodged against Modi by the Jaipur police last year.
After the Supreme Court gave reprieve to Modi and allowed him to stand fro elections in the Rajasthan Cricket Association, now Modi has got another judgment in his favor. A court in Mumbai has granted him bail in the case of forgery and cheating filed against him in Jaipur. The cops registered a case after a complaint was made that Modi had issued only "bogus cheques'' to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund last May though he had announced a day before the IPL match that Rs 6 crore would be given as voluntary contribution for the victims of the May 2008 Jaipur blast. The charge of forgery attracts 10 years in jail or even life imprisonment. Modi's defence counsel, Amit Desai and Pranav Badheka, argued in court that the amount was to be paid by eight teams and the IPL sponsors voluntarily; Rs 5.2 crore had been paid and only two sponsors were unable to pay the promised Rs 40 lakh each because of financial difficulties. Counsel for Modi informed the learned court that there was no intention on the part of the management of IPL to cheat in the instant case. They also informed the learned judge Ashwini Kumar Deovre that this is a just a political vendetta arising out of the impending elections to the Rajasthan Cricket Board. Modi's lawyers also said he could not be held liable for a breach of commitment made by others. It indeed is correct position as being in-charge of IPL who was looking after the running of the program in totality it would not have been possible for him to look into micro managing the program.
