The International Cricket Councils’ chief executive committee meeting is currently underway; at the end of day one, the ICC’s Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat addressed a cricket news conference to talk about all the issues that are currently before the ICC and international cricket as a whole.
Mr. Lorgat spoke about the ongoing recession and the impact it has had on cricket and its sponsors. "We need to be very responsible in the way we manage ourselves in tough times. We recognise that all of us in one way or another will be impacted," he said. He indicated that the ICC was in good financial health and that targets had been met when he said, "We're in a very good place in terms of revenue, the financial security of the game." One of the issues sought to be addressed by the ICC is that of attendance of live matches, particularly in test matches and that it had been agreed that more funding would be provided for promotions of test matches. The holding of a test championship has not been ruled out; however it is not finding favour with countries like India and England because a championship would compete with established "icon" bilateral series, such as the Ashes and India-Pakistan. Sources have been quoted in the cricket news as saying that BCCI was reportedly also not happy with the ICC for issuing a media release a couple of days before the meeting, saying they were hopeful of a reaching a ‘mutually acceptable solution’. The Board reportedly did not know of this release before it was sent. One of the biggest challenges that currently faces the ICC is the knotty ICL problem, which they have to find a solution for since it has many international cricket players on its roll. The boards of many countries are pressuring the ICC to find a solution since their players are automatically banned because of their participation in the Indian Cricket League. The boards are in turn being pressurized by their players and unions who are threatening legal action on the issue.
