It seems that what happened in Antigua has made much needed rear guard action on the part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to start reforms in this sector so that no match is either abandoned or has a result which may be against the expectations i.e. it is finished off much earlier than the stipulated time limits. Therefore ICC has issued warning to the cricket boards over the nature of Test grounds. Based on the action initiated by the ICC, chief executives of major cricket countries agreed Wednesday that host boards will have to guarantee the suitability of grounds for international matches following the Antigua fiasco.
Now ICC has mandated that all the member countries will be required to notify the International Cricket Council (ICC) in February each year, the venues that it had short listed to be used for hosting international matches over the next 12 months. The notification would also incorporate a certification from the respective board that the grounds were of a suitable standard. This is a fall out of what happened in Antigua after the second Test between West Indies and England at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium earlier this month. The match had to be abandoned when only 10 balls were bowled, as the outfit was totally unfit for continuing the game. Match referee Alan Hurst has already submitted a report to the ICC, which has been forwarded to the West Indies Cricket Board. Now the West Indian Board has to submit its own report. After it has been submitted ICC general manager, cricket, David Richardson and chief match referee Ranjan Madugalle will study the evidence before passing judgment. The ICC has the power to impose a sanction ranging from a warning or a fine up to a suspension of international status for the venue.
