There was this advertisement about a Pan Masala (Beetle & Tobacco Mixture) where in the CEO of a company is shown acquiring companies in England and the tag line goes, these people had ruled on us for centuries, now we will rule on them. Exactly the same thing seems to be happening with the Essex County Club, which is so bereft of cash that it has come on a mission to seek money from Indian investors for revival of their county. Remember, Essex is one of the most famous counties in England.
BCCI has indeed become one of the richest corporations that look after the affairs of cricket in the world. This has been proved by the SOS mission that Essex County representatives have embarked upon in India to seek funds for reviving their county. This mission is being headed by Graham Gooch, the erstwhile cricket captain of England and present ambassador for the club, Essex. The representatives from Essex are on a mission in India to raise $ 100 million from the Indian investors which would provide them sustenance for a long time to come. The money being sought would be utilized in rebuilding the cricket stadium in Essex and development of real estate around the ground. It would be one of the first instances where in England, the club owners are not able to raise money and so the other best options that they have sought is to search for it in India. It is also interesting pointer to the fact that cricket as a sports in England is really second priority and slowly it is becoming a football country. It is manifest from the fact that there is no football club in England which is short of any cash but there must be score of cricket clubs in this situation if Essex is in it. Of the $100 million that is being envisaged to be raised, $70 million would be used to fund the development of real estate around the club wile remaining $30 million would be utilized for development of infrastructure of cricket. The model is being offered as a mixed use model to ensure interest of the investor in the project, as the development of the real estate would lead in a windfall for the investor. By the money that is being planned to be invested in the real estate around 400 dwelling units and commercial establishments would be created. The investor also gets an opportunity to get the Essex stadium named after itself and it would be the real elixir moment for the Indian investors, the ultimate nationalist high.
