Gone are the days when the cricket boards set the terms and conditions for the players and they abided by it. Those were the days when the board was the only benefactor and the players used to sing on dotted lines about the kind of contract that they were asked to sign by the boards.
Boards still rule with iron fist, but are also now aware that they cannot roughshod over the stars in a team as compared to the player. In most of the teams there are more than four-five star players and they have to be pampered, Pakistan Cricket team is no exception. The difference is that in the present team of Pakistan the stars are less in numbers and it has more number of players. Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ejaz Butt on Friday dispelled rumors that there is a difference of opinion between the senior players and the Board regarding the central contracts. While nobody may have approached the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ejaz Butt but there are indications that most of the players including skipper Younis Khan want a particular clause dropped from the contracts which states that if a player is away from Pakistan for more then 30 days to play in a foreign league, he will not get his monthly retainer for that month. One does not know whether this clause has been included to deter the Pakistani players from playing in the Indian Cricket League, as most of the players who are playing in the Pakistan team presently have been playing in the ICL. May be it is on account of the clause, but for Shoaib Akhtar, none of the other players have signed the central contracts. The players of Pakistan may however get a patient hearing as the board was pleased with the attitude and performance of the team in the first Test against Sri Lanka. The board is particularly pleased with the performance of the skipper, Younis Khan who has shown character.
