Lalit Modi, Chairman of the Indian premier League (IPL) is once again in the cricket news, for having lost the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) elections. Modi who was president of the RCA has lost in a bid to be reelected to the position. This time around the election was won by Sanjay Dixit, IAS officer, who is a relatively unknown bureaucrat. Modi was in charge of this portfolio for the past 5 years which was his launch pad for national and later international cricket and which ultimately made him among the most powerful men in Indian cricket, and by that token world cricket! Modi is still the Vice President of BCCI, Vice President of Punjab Cricket Association and is associated with a myriad other business ventures.
What must be a bitter pill to swallow; defeat in his home state is a obvious setback and according to Modi, "Of course we are disappointed with the results. A lot of hard work has gone in and that is why we are disappointed with it. But at the end of the day, it is a verdict of the voters." Modi tried to put a brave face on it when he said "It's a part of life and we have to live with it and continue with it," however he maintained that this was a politically motivated result. Modi maintains that it is him proximity to former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje that cost his this election and which is also the cause for what he calls a ‘witch hunt’ whereby several cases or cheating and misappropriation have been filed against him. "I paid the price of being close to Vasundhara Raje. The state government did whatever it could to defeat me,” he said. In the midst of this loss for Modi, it is the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) who has seen a chance. The GCA is now hoping that the inaugural IPL match between Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals and Virender Sehwag’s Delhi Daredevils will be held in the Motera stadium at Ahmedabad. As of now however Modi has called such hopes unfounded and has clarified that "But it will not affect the IPL matches. They will be held in Jaipur only," so perhaps the GCA should not get its hopes us just yet.
