Imran Khan Has To Eat Crow Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Investigator
Thursday, 05 March 2009

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

As if to put dust on the views expressed by the former Pakistan Captain Imran Khan, the terrorists tried to ambush the bus carrying the Sri Lankan players, which they were on the way to the stadium in Lahore to play the match with Pakistan. Imran Khan had made the remark that the terrorists would not bring about any disturbance in the matter relating to the cricketers, as it is a gentleman's game.

Imran Khan must have tried to project a rosy picture of his country when he had given the statement that the terrorist would not strike the game of cricket, as the sports is not at all an issue with the terrorists. He must have eaten crow when the bus carrying the Sir Lankan team was attacked mercilessly and the terrorists were able to hurt few of the players. The main reason, why Imran Khan had given this statement to change the image of the world about Pakistan, as far as playing cricket in Pakistan was concerned. But it has stood on its head, and cricket in Pakistan by an international team is now all but gone. No country would be touring Pakistan at least in the near future, and such has been the impact that even the World Cup matches scheduled in Pakistan are in jeopardy.

By giving the statement, may be Imran would have tried to reach out to the terrorist organizations, giving them a message that they should not do anything that may harm the interest of the cricket for Pakistan. But it has not had any sobering influence. Sports have also not been given a respect that was requested by Imran Khan. After all, a sport is what unites the country, and it assuages the frayed nerves. Now it would require a monumental effort to build up the things from scratch and whether they would be built on or not is again a million dollar question.

The statements after the attack given by prominent Pakistani cricket personalities also underline the gravity of the situation. Pakistan captain Younis Khan said his team was lucky to escape the attack. The team was saved as it decided to leave the hotel five minutes after the Sri Lankans, as Younis revealed it in a news conference. Had both the teams moved together it would have been catastrophic, as it is a monumental task to build a team from scratch?

Imran was referring to "local" miscreants when he said that terrorists
will not harm cricket in Pak. He never talked about foreign elements.
