Specter of Terror Attack Casting Shadow on IPL Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Reporter

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

The echoes of terror attack on the Sri Lankan team has started making its reverberations on the future of Indian Premier League, with particular reference to the players from foreign countries. The doubt has started creeping in their minds, and they are thinking whether it would be worthwhile to play in the IPL at the cost of life. Jacob Oram, who plays for Chennai Super Kings, has made the choice, and said that he would think twice before traveling to India for the IPL.

The decision that Oram has taken about not playing in IPL had its mooring in the attacks that happened in Mumbai on 26 November. He was of the view that though sporadic troubles were happening in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the attack on Mumbai made him think about his life. He has however conceded to the fact that the Indian Premier League has given him an economic freedom that he could not even aspire in his dreams. But he also holds the view that the economic freedom cannot come at the cost of the family, he has a family and its security and safety devolves on him. As he said, though, cricket’s important but it’s not as important as his life.

He also informed that he ahs got assurances from Lalit Modi and the Indian Premier League that the security will be beefed up for the event but he opined that the final decision would be taken by him after he discusses the issue with Heath Mills. He indicated that he would not take any decision in haste to repent later. Commenting on the sniper shooting and how to avoid it, he said that he would need to have a rubber arm if he makes up his mind to go to India.

Even his captain, Daniel Vettori endorsed his view and opined that the tour to Pakistan was off; India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni too declared that no team would go next-door for at least a few years. Though the players individually may be expressing their apprehensions about going or not going to the sub-continent the NZ cricket has a totally different take on the whole issue, and opined that the tour has not been called off as yet.

India came into the leap only because of the recent Mumbai attacks and had serious apprehensions. One wonders whether in such a scenario when the political establishment in India gives an opinion that it would not be able to provide a security to Indian Premier League does it in its own way add to the chaos in IPL, more so in relation to IPL.
