Security has always been an issue for all international cricket played in India, because of the frenzied reaction that cricket and cricket players have always evoked. With the Indian Premier League starring so many foreign players and the huge spectacle that the IPL is, makes the problem even more complex. Now in wake of the Lahore attacks of Tuesday security for cricket matches and cricket players as also cricket fans has come to the forefront like never before.
With the Indian Premier League security issues being a much debated topic in the cricket news recently, the IPL has put in place an elaborate set of security measures to ensure that there is no untoward happening during, before or after any T20 match of the IPL. Here are some of the measures that will be in place for the Indian Premier League tournament:- There will be a monitoring of the grounds surrounding the stadium and stands within with the help of Close circuit TV cameras at all times.
- There will be put into place a disaster management plan that was conceived even before the Lahore attack on the Sri Lankan team. This includes having a quick evacuation plan in place. According to I.S. Bindra, Indian Premier League governing council member & principal advisor to ICC, it took the Sri Lankan team three hours to be evacuated from Gaddafi stadium where they had taken sanctuary after being attacked and injured; it should not have taken that long.
- Entry for spectators only to be allowed through turnstiles so that ticketing and security checks are effectively done.
- The security for the dressing rooms and dugouts as well as checks on spectators will be upped, which it has been warned may cause some inconvenience to spectators.
- Routes to be sanitised with alternative routes worked out in advance with the state administration. A plan based on the Chennai/Mumbai template put in place for the tests against England following the Mumbai attacks will be in employed.
- The security will extend to the hotels where players will be staying: the players will be staying on secure, cordoned off floors which will ensure their safety.
As Bindra has said the overall security plan would be handled by private security and also spoke about the South African security consultants Nicholls, Steyn & Associates, who were brought in after the Jaipur blasts during last summer's Indian Premier League who prepared a detailed risk assessment and protection strategy and makes suggestions that are then given to all the host cities. “Last time, we implemented their suggestion that control rooms, normally located in basements in Indian stadiums, were moved to places from where security supervisors could have a complete view of the grounds. It's a detail that makes matters more foolproof,” he said.
