Who would have thought that sports like cricket, which is hardly played in few countries of the world, would draw such an attention that playing the game itself would be in direct proportion to the security associated with it? But it seems to be happening, and there is a sickening commonality started getting associated with it.
It had all started with questions being raised by the boards of the foreign countries, more so those in the western world, who had started raising doubt about the security of the players, who are currently doing the national duty, and have been contracted to play in the Indian Premier League. Now another salvo has been fired on the matter by the International Cricket Council, ICC itself, which has tried to distance itself from the security being provided for the World Cup 2011. It seems that ICC as the top cricketing body seems to confine itself with the advisory role and is not ready to don the mantle of being the overall in charge to look into all the gamut of the game. This surmise has been arrived at on account of the position that ICC has taken that it would not be responsible for safety and security of the players anywhere in the world, and this is fallout of the terror attacks on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. Clarifying on the issue, Chief Executive of ICC, Haroon Lorgat opined that ICC would view all tournaments being conducted under its aegis from the same perspective, i.e. the security issue would not be under its domain of reference. It is also a point worth pondering, whether this so-called security perception is more to counter the might of the Indian board which has emerged as one of the richest boards in the world. This is the fore most conclusions that can be drawn. After all, ICC is the parent body and it has a whole set up of observers who provide it a detailed pre and post match follow up reports. It can always engage international security bodies to have their view about the security threats, and accordingly help the respective boards in providing the same, instead of passing the buck as it is being done now.
