With very sporting honesty, Brendon McCullum, himself an explosive batsman capable of destroying the opposition on his day, has said that he favours Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag from the Indian team and West Indian skipper Chris Gayle to breach the 200 run mark in one day internationals. And indeed in the power plays and batsmen friendly pitches tilting the game in favour of the batsmen, McCullum’s prophecy for limited overs international cricket may come true sooner rather than later.
It is a tribute to this present Indian cricket team led by MS Dhoni that Brendon McCullum picked two Indians out of three, who in his opinion are the possible contenders for the singular distinction of being able to get to the 200 run mark in ODIs. It took this team to break a decades-long jinx in international cricket, a 30 year drought of series wins in New Zealand; which they have done by crushing a not inconsiderable Kiwi side in no uncertain terms. Each match was an emphatic win; each a lesson in dominance; each made cricket news headlines for reasons of masterly displays with the bat!
If on one occasion it was Tendulkar who decimated the bowling, on another Virender Sehwag raced away to the fastest ODI century ever by an Indian. And if the mighty Sachin says that this team rather than any other has the best batting line up he has ever played in, then everyone in international cricket takes heed. According to Sachin, “At the back of the mind, we know that with such an explosive line-up no target is impossible."
And McCullum seems to agree with Sachin’s assessment about this Indian batting line up, that no target is impossible; even that elusive benchmark of a double century in ODIs when he picked West Indies skipper Chris Gayle, Sehwag and Sachin as players capable of scoring a double hundred in limited overs cricket.
McCullum, who has the kind of explosive talent which saw him score an unbeaten 158 for the Kolkata Knight riders in the first edition of the twenty20 Indian Premier League last year, said, "Gayle, Sehwag, Tendulkar are capable of scoring a double. There are plenty of guys around the world who dominate the attack as well. I'm sure we will see that happen soon."
According to the Kiwi batsman, it is T20 cricket that has altered the mindset of players and teams and that once that 200 run mark is breached by one cricketer, many more will follow suit. “It is something that everyone holds in such high regard that it almost seems unachievable at the moment. Wickets are getting better, the boundaries are getting shorter and there are the power plays as well, which make it a lot more possible. Sachin (163 retired hurt) was with a big chance to get a double hundred the other day," said McCullum.
We shall see who is the first to make cricket news for getting to that double century first!
