While the mainstream international cricket may take sometime to return, the veterans hope that they could initiate the beginning if the Indian veterans come over to Pakistan to play with them the annual veterans series. The National Veterans Association hopes against hope that Indian veterans would come to Pakistan for a series in September-October. Chairman of Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA), Fawad Ejaz said a tour by the Indian veterans was still on, and they are hopeful that it would materialize.
In the times of strife it is the sports persons who take the lead to smoothen the ruffled feathers. The National Veterans Association which organizes veterans matches between India and Pakistan hopes to attain the same. There hopes hinges on the fact that the Indian team of the veterans would be playing a series in Pakistan sometimes in September-October. They have an honest hope that the tour is still on, as they have not heard the last word on the matter from the Indian side. On the Indian side the Indian veterans’ body is headed by former Indian Test opener, Chetan Chauhan, also a parliamentarian. Fawad said the series between the Pakistan and Indian veteran teams had been postponed twice since early 2008 for different reasons although the last time India toured Pakistan it was a great success financially and otherwise for the PVCA. The moot point in this whole affair is whether the government of India provides the necessary clearance to the veterans to travel to Pakistan to play the matches. After all, they are all former great players of their times, and if any untoward incident happens then it would remain a stigma for the Indian government all of their life. It could however a positive step in the direction for the cause of the World Cup 2011 if the Indian veterans travel to Pakistan. They have been at the forefront of establishing diplomatic relationships and trying to open the impersonal channels of communication to being the normalcy in relations, and what better way to do it than sports, and that too cricket which has a cult following.
