Champions Trophy to be Played in South Africa, Opines ICC Print E-mail

All kinds of efforts are being organized to see to it that the Champions Trophy is not annulled and be organized in South Africa, if need be. Even the ICC has recommended the same and has desired that South Africa be the venue instead of Pakistan where the matches were to be played in September. Now that the security environment in Pakistan has further deteriorated, to resurrect the game ICC has decided that the Champions trophy be conducted in South Africa in the month of September.
Would Champions Trophy finally see the light for this year? If the efforts of ICC in this regard are taken into consideration, then it may finally see the light and this may be at the beginning of the fall season i.e. September.  The reason behind penciling down South Africa and hastening of the decision to do so may have been propelled by the recent attacks on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore.

Earlier it was decided that the tournament might be shifted to Sri Lanka so that the sub-continent may not be deprived of a tournament. But the fight between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan army may have created a doubt in the mind of the ICC about the probability of the tournament being conducted in Sri Lanka. The decision to look for alternate venue was also prompted by the vagaries of the weather in Sri Lanka. September being the month when the island nation is hit by incessant rains, the tournament may have been conducted more by washouts than by actually playing the game.

But it being an international tournament and having great financial implications for the ICC itself, the tournament could not have been postponed indefinitely. The next venue therefore was South Africa.

The ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat informed that to make the tournament happen this year it has been decided to reduce its span and now the matches would be finished within 12 days. There would not be any reserve days. While the idea behind reducing the span of the tournament to 12 days on the part of the ICC may be to make it a short, sharp event, as on that basis there would be no room for reserve days, the toll that the players would take does not seem to be of the concern of ICC. It seems that the monetary considerations would again have an overriding bearing on the physical self of the players.

The ICC in a meeting has agreed that it would be prudent to look to hold the tournament in South Africa, subject to agreement over financial arrangements. The ICC at a meeting of the board on Monday will decide on the recommendation.
