It indeed would be a moment of honor and his heart must have been filled with pride that the Eastern Districts Cricket Association (EDCA) for having played 100 Tests has bestowed VVS Laxman with an honor at Eden Park on Thursday. It indeed would one of the rare achievements that a player from different a country has been bestowed with such an honor and this is probably owing to the fact that VVS is indeed Very-Very Special.
You might not be an expressive player on the field, and in this age of aggression may therefore lose out from hitting the headlines on a regular basis, but the reputation indeed helps you. This has happened in the case of Laxman who has been accorded with this honor in New Zealand. In a very special gathering in which were present Laxman’s childhood coach and former Hyderabad opener V. Manohar, a junior Andhra team on tour of New Zealand and its opponent from the EDCA, and former New Zealand cricketer Deepak Patel, the batting artist was presented with a memento. Such was the poignancy of the occasion that Laxman went to inform the gathering that it was for the first time that he had been felicitated in his cricketing career outside India. Laxman has been profuse in his reverence for his coaches who provided him the guidance to become a cricketer that he is now, and as a token of gratitude he ahs felicitated all his coaches who have been associated with him at any point in his life. There was only one coach who had not been felicitated, Manohar, and it was because he had settled in Auckland. But Laxman could felicitate him as well, after he landed in the Kiwi Islands. Laxman on the occasion had a few words of wisdom for the young cricketers who had graced this occasion. He encouraged the young cricketers, exhorting them to strive to play for their nation, but also advised them that in their zeal to play for the nation, they should not be oblivious to the joys of discovering other cultures. On the occasion Deepak Patel remarked, that on his day Laxman was even better than Sachin Tendulkar.
