Laws as an entity keeps on getting modified and amended. While in the business of jurisprudence it is an easy job to bring about the amendments, in case of sports it takes sometime to do it. Cricket is one such arena where revolutionary changes have happened in the recent times and therefore Marylebone Cricket Club has thought it prudent to rewrite the laws that govern the game of cricket.

Cricket as a genre would not have seen the kind of changes from the times when it was invented to the present times. It is indeed a revolution. Now the players are armed with so much protection, that if the originators of the cricket decided to walk down on the arena and see how the game that they invented, they would not be able to recognize the game as it has evolved today. For the posteriori, it always is a better idea to record the changes, and document them, so that the next generation can study and comment on it. Cricket is one such sport which had a humble beginning and now it has moved on from the nation which invented it and has become a staple part of everyday life, more so in the Asian sub-continent.

The documentation may also have been necessitated on account of the controversy that has come to associate with the game. The view has started forming that it was not England where the game of cricket originated. When the codification is being done once again, apart from other things, this issue can also be dwelled upon in great detail. The immediate need for updating is to include the usage of the Face Protectors used by wicket-keepers and fielders.

The MCC has come out with a two page note on the issue and it has been circulated to all the members. According to the note the change envisaged is to codify the fact that after the introduction of face protectors for wicket-keepers and fielders, they may be worn under the Laws of Cricket. For this purpose, all kinds of face protectors should be treated as a helmet. It would not be out of the place to inform that all the copy rights of cricket are vested with the Marylebone Cricket Club since 1788.

The manner, in which the game is progressing and its reliance on technology for decision making, also needs to be codified, as it would be a major point of departure for ICC. For some researcher in future, if he wants to make a study on the manner of decision making process, it would serve as the good veritable tool.
