Umpires Endorse the Review System Introduced by the ICC Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Observer

Technology has always been used as a facilitation device and there have been few murmurs in the initial stages, but when its benefits have been revealed the opposition has been very feeble and scanty. When the referral system was introduced by the ICC for facilitating the decision making process christened as ‘Decision Review System-Trial Playing Conditions 2008-09,’ there was apprehension that the umpires may not like it. But the feedback has been contrary. They are very much pleased for being provided with technical devices to facilitate the decision making processes, especially in the instances where it could be a matter of touch and go.

The umpires are mighty pleased, and they want the system of the referral to continue and this is more so after the recent West Indies-England series, where many decisions were reversed, after seeking the help of technology.

ICC had prepared a confidential 16-page document “Decision Review System Trial Report-Sri Lanka/India Test series July/August 2008” based on the feedback given by the   South African umpire Rudi Koertzen (one Test away from officiating in 100 games) and England’s Emirates Panel umpire Mark Benson.

The technical help has meant that the umpires can now relax in the field, as they always know at the back of their minds, that there is a technical help at the beck and call, so the institution of umpiring would not be dissected threadbare by the media hounds who would be waiting for such an opportunity with a bated breath.

The umpires who are doing the duty in the dressing room may feel awkward in the beginning overturning decision of the colleague but they are also of the view that they talk the issue out after the end of the day and there is no bad blood involved at all in the whole process. After all, it is the question of reputation of the fraternity that had been put at stake, and which is now on the path of redemption after the technology has been provided as a facilitating device in the process of decision-making.

After all, in all the games where so much commercial stakes are involved it is always better to strive to induce as much as impartiality as can be possible and the facilitation device can assume any form for the same. The caution that can be exercised in the process is that the decisions, which are marginal, may not be overturned, but if there are gross errors it needs to be reviewed.
