What is a test series if it does not begin with a halo of controversy situated around it? With such an exciting One-day series between India and New Zealand coming to an end, and the test series round the corner, a controversy has started brewing around the composition of the New Zealand team. The controversy revolves around the fast bowler Chris Martin's inclusion in the New Zealand test squad and the coach has come in the firing line.
The New Zealand coach has denied that the inclusion of fast bowler Chris Martin is a controversial decision and that he has been included only at the instance of the captain of the Kiwis Daniel Vettori. The media is rife with speculation and rumor that even the chairman of the selection committee Glenn Turner was not favorably inclined to include him in the Kiwi squad, but he could be included only on account of the weight of the skipper behind him. Moles feels that the selectors cannot pick up somebody only because a captain has a preference for him, a player is pick up on the merits of the game and thee may be some percentile doubts, where the captain may play a part. A captain obviously better understands the team composition. Advantage of Martin lies in the fact that he can bat as well, and it adds meat to the tail. In the crunch situation games, which are happening these days, it is what must have been the deciding factor in favour of Martin. As it is Kiwis cricket is suffering the pangs of losing their finest fast bowler, Shane Bond, in the recent times, who has not been playing as he was playing with the rebel cricket league, ICL in India. He was indeed a terror front line bowler. New Zealand on account of this controversy with their fast bowler may have to start with a back foot in the test match series.
