India Keep Upper Hand on Day 1 of First Test Print E-mail

Review of the first day of the first test match between India and New Zealand played in Hamilton on Wednesday. New Zealand batted first and concluded their innings at 279 runs scoring at 3.56 runs per over. India got to play seven overs before the day ended and are at 29 for no loss.

The third wing of the Indian tour of New Zealand began on Wednesday as the two sides take on each other in the first test match in Hamilton. India trail by 250 runs with 10 wickets in hand at the first day stumps. Virender Sehwag (22) and Gautam Gambhir (6) will resume the game from 29-0 tomorrow.

New Zealand were bowled out for 279 after India won the toss and elected to field first. Jesse Ryder and Daniel Vettori played centurion knocks which saved the day for the hosts. Ryder registered his maiden test ton which comprised of fourteen fours. Jesse Ryder’s catch off Ishant Sharma’s delivery was the last wicket to fall for New Zealand. The rest of the team put up a sad show as only McIntosh (12), Guptill (14) and Taylor (18) crossed the double digit mark.

Daniel Vettori played a vital knock of 118 runs as he revived his side after it had slumped to 60-6. Zaheer Khan clinched Guptill (14) and Flynn (0) leaving New Zealand at 17-2. McIntosh (12), Taylor (18) and Franklin (0) fell prey to Ishant Sharma and left New Zealand tottering at 51-5. The hosts looked in trouble at 60-6 after Munaf Patel took Brendon McCullum’s (3) wicket.

Skipper Daniel Vettori came to his team’s rescue as he played a dashing centurion innings. His 118 runs included two sixes and fourteen fours as he took his side to a respectable 246-7 where he gave away his wicket to Munaf Patel. Kyle Mills (0) was clean bowled on the very next delivery by Patel as the Kiwi downfall began. Ryder along with O’Brien (8) stretched the innings further by thirty runs when it finally ended at 279.  

Ishant Sharma bagged four wickets, Munaf Patel got three and Zaheer Khan scalped two wickets today. In response, India had a good start as they managed six boundaries in the total of 29 runs scored today. India will look forward to continue the rhythm tomorrow and pile up an intimidating total.
