No International Cricket in Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua Print E-mail

It indeed is a tough world being a celebrity. If you render your name to an arena more so in the game in which you have made a name for yourself, it indeed feels utterly disgraceful when your name is brought into picture all over the world, but for negative reasons. This is what Sir Vivian Richards must be thinking after the fiasco that happened in the match between England and West Indies in stadium that has been named after him. He was livid, in fact when the controversy had erupted and the decision whereby no international matches would be played for the next one year, it made him squirm. Now whenever any talk would be initiated on the matter, unwittingly, his name would also loom into the picture.

So it has been decided. The West Indian Cricket Board has come to the conclusion that for a period of one year henceforth, no international matches would be played in the Sir Vivian Richards Ground in Antigua. This fallout is due to the abandoning of the second test match against England in February.  It had happened for the first time in the history of cricket that an international match had to be abandoned on account of the pathetic condition of the pitch. Now after undertaking a thorough inspection of the pitch ICC has advised the WICB that the ground needs to be rebuilt in an extensive manner to make it at par with the international standards. For this purpose probably a time frame of one year has been provided, and ICC has also desired that it would accord its sanction only after it undertakes the inspection of the pitch.

ICC has not allowed the matter to be resolved after this decision. It has given an official warning to the WICB for the status of the ground that was so sandy, that the bowlers were not able to generate any pace, momentum and traction to bowl a fast ball. West Indian bowlers Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards could manage only 10 deliveries between them before the captains and umpires came together and decided to end the match.

Moot point in this whole episode is, if the said match had taken place it might have resulted into a totally different result for the series, which West Indies won eventually. It is therefore imperative on the part of the ECB to dwell on this issue and bring it to the notice of the ICC, so that it can also get some justice in the matter. This argument is being put up without going into the merits of the resurgence of the West Indies Team in the current series.
