Would their careers follow the same destiny? Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid had started their international careers together, if one discounts the tour to Australia in which Sourav was not given an opportunity to play, but had been asked to be the 12th man. Both of these stars had blazed the cricket arena with a dream debut, but it seems that their cricketing career is going to end on the same sordid note.
While Vijay Mallya, the owner of Bangalore Royal Challengers has gone on record to announce that Rahul Dravid would not captain his side in the second season of the Indian Premier League, the status of Sourav Ganguly is still hanging on suspended. It is this state that is leading to sinister campaign of Sourav being dropped from the second season of the IPL as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders. Is IPL also showing the door to our senior players who on their own are not hanging their boots? It started with Rahul Dravid and now it seems that Sourav Ganguly would also be following the same fate. Is it got something to do with the age factor, of both these players? It would indeed be an unsavoury manner to dump the former Indian captains in such a manner. Sourav has been associating himself in a big way with the NDTV Imagine to prepare a cheer leading team for his club, and he had gone on record to say that he would show how much cricket is still left in him during the second season of the IPL. Now that the IPL has been shifted out of India, the franchisee owners of both the teams need to give a second thought to the stand that thy have taken in one case and might be contemplating in other case. Both these players have fantastic one day record internationally, more so Sourav at the top of the order, especially in South Africa. The coach of Kolkata Knight Riders is non-committal on this aspect whether Sourav would captain the side or not. If he is not given this opportunity then it would be difficult for him to find a place in the squad on the merit of his T20 batting skills. His first season with the IPL as a batsman was not a meritorious performance and if he is not allowed to be the captain, then may be it would be curtains for his career in 20-20 as well, like his former deputy Rahul Dravid. KKR has picked up four more youngsters, Shoaib Sheikh (Mumbai), Sunny Singh (Haryana), Arindam Ghosh and Sourav Sarkar (both Bengal). All of them have been named as new recruits of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) squad of 28 for the second edition of the Indian Premier League.
