In a totally unprecedented move, that is likely to be subject matter of much cricket controversy and criticism, coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL team, John Buchanan has declared that the KKR team will have rotating captains; maybe as many as four. Those that see Sourav Ganguly as the unassailable icon and the captain of the KKR team will not only have trouble digesting Ganguly being deposed as captain, they will positively reject such an idea of rotating captains.
Never in international cricket has the idea of rotating captains been mooted, which apparently is the brainchild of Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan. It was an idea that caused Sourav Ganguly to riposte, "tomorrow I can also ask for four coaches.” He was quoted in the cricket news as saying, "Tomorrow I can jump out and say we need four batting coaches, four John Buchanan’s and Shah Rukh Khan can say we need six Andy Bichels." (Read the Cricket360 related article "Would Sourav Ganguly Follow Dravid’s Fate in IPL?") The big story in cricket news last evening was that of Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy of the KKR IPL team being in peril and a new idea of as many as four rotating captains was proposed by Coach John Buchanan. This idea, according to Ganguly, was not communicated him by the coach; he learnt of it through the media. "I learnt about the captaincy issue from the press, I was never consulted about the issue on captaincy," he said. As to whether he feels upset or insulted by the sequence of events where he learnt of the developments from the media he said, “I really don't find anything in these words which will really bother or upset me. It's a plan, the way he wants to play Twenty20 cricket. I think it's his (Buchanan's) idea, he wants to do that. We've to wait and see whether it actually happens in the team or not. It's too premature to say anything on that because he feels that's the way Twenty20 cricket should be played," Ganguly was quoted as having said in the cricket news. (Read the Cricket360 related article "Sourav Disappointed but “What to do”") Buchanan also was reported in the cricket news talking about his new vision for T20 matches with multiple captains: "We will choose the captain depending on the game. There can be multiple team captains in the series," said Buchanan. We will be watching closely to see breaking cricket news developments in this particular story.
