Suspense would also be not an apt word to describe the predicament that has come to associate with the second season of Indian Premier League. Though a decision has been taken that the matches would now no more be played in India, there is still a speculation about the final venue, and the toss is going to be between South Africa and England. This was informed by Lalit Modi, the Chairman of IPL on Monday.

IPL in the Second Season would indeed be one of the rare tournaments where a venue shift at the last moment has meant that everybody who is associated with it continues to be on the tenterhooks. There are huge logistical arrangements to be made and when the place where the matches are to be played is still undecided, it is really becoming a Byzantine maze. The statement of the IPL Chairman should however be able to clear some of the cobwebs on the issue as he is hopeful that by Tuesday the venue would be confirmed, and once this is done other things would start falling in place automatically. The time to bite the bullet has come. Lalit Modi has already given his view point on the issue to Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola and will hold detailed talks with him in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

The choice of the venue ultimately would be guided by the weather conditions and the other deciding factor would the calendar of cricketing events in the two countries. The choice of England and South Africa was owing to large ex-partite Indian population in both the countries who would be able to fill up for the Indian fans. The balance could be tilted in favour of South Africa as it does not have much international commitment after the current tour by Australia, which would wind up by mid-April.

It is the economic boost which would arise from hosting the tournaments that has been the x-factor for both the countries to take a call on IPL hosting, informed Mr. Modi. For England the dilemma could be that it has to immediately host the T20 World Cup after the IPL gets over. This may mean an overdose of cricket of the same form within a short span of time and could have an impact on collections. South Africa does not have any such dilemma as its next International fixture is the Champions Trophy that would be held in October.
