Sachin Tendulkar is not the only one who is disappointed with the Indian Premier League moving out of India and on to South Africa this year. Most Indians have espoused an opinion on this, either positive or negative. Even former Pakistani player Javed Miandad has opined on this shift, saying it will not affect cricket in India, who thinks that the ICC and other cricket nations cannot afford not to play here since “there’s a lot of money involved.”
The opposition parties in India may have tried to pitch it to the cricket news that the Indian Premier league shifting out of India was a “national shame”, but most cricket fans to understand that elections have to have priority in a county that is the most populous democracy in the world. In fact many are angry that a mere game is trying to equate itself to the general elections in the country in terms of security measures required. Many cricket fans are reasonably angered at the fixation with money and glamour that has recently become a permanent fixture of international cricket because of the Indian Premier League. (Read Cricket360 related articles "Loads of re-work for Advertisers and Insurers due to IPL Shift ") Those that see international cricket as a national waste of time are actually viewing the departure from the IPL for India to foreign shores as ‘good riddance to bad rubbish’. There are many that frown of the seemingly western concept as cheerleaders diluting the game. However at least one commentator on the game was quoted in the cricket news as saying that IPL Season 2 moving out of India was a good thing; that it would make the game more popular the world over and then it would be considered for the Olympics as well! Miandad used the opportunity to say that all Asian cricket playing nations should get together and figure out a way to restore cricket in Pak which admittedly took a beating due to the Lahore attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team. "After the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore obviously Pakistan cricket has been hurt badly. But overall I think the Asian nations need to sit down together and come up a joint strategy to provide security to touring teams that are acceptable to the ICC and its member nations. I just feel that India has to play a lead role in ensuring security issues, don't kill the sport in the region," he said. With the Indian Premier League moving to South Africa one wonders if the hopes of Pak players being able to attend the cricket extravaganza will once again be revived. One cannot help but hope that is so!
