Among the recent stories of cricket news doing the rounds, one is that the present coach for the South African national cricket team, Mickey Arthur, is being considered for the job of the coach for the English team. Arthur has himself confirmed that this is a position he was not averse to having. The position of coach for the English team is one the ECB are seeking to fill after the sacking of Peter Moores following his public spat with former skipper Kevin Pietersen.
Although South African coach Mickey Arthur claims to be very happy with his job and is fully committed to it being under contract will 2011, he has said that being the English coach is a ‘huge job’ and that no ambitious coach could rule himself out completely. After all international cricket often is witness to scenarios where the coach of one national team subsequently takes up position as a coach for another team. This is hardly unprecedented cricket news. And the ECB has in fact been hunting for a permanent replacement for the position of national coach ever since the sacking of Peter Moores. "Coaching England is a huge job and I find it very hard to believe that any ambitious coach would rule himself out completely. But I must stress again I am under contract until 2011. I am absolutely committed to the South African team," Arthur has clarified in the cricket news. "A year ago my situation was very different to how it is now and I mandated an agency in London to apply on my behalf for coaching positions which they thought would be suitable and of interest. I have never tried to hide my ambition to work in county cricket one day," Arthur was quoted as having said in the cricket news. The fact that in England he may well be earning considerably more than what he does in South Africa, as much as three times more according to some estimates, may only be incidental according to him. And Arthur is not the only one being considered for the job of English coach. The others in the reckoning are current temporary England coach Andy Flower (who is favoured by team captain Andrew Strauss), West Indies coach John Dyson, Kent's Graham Ford, and former Indian coach and present Kiwi selector John Wright.
