After starting the very first and most respected ‘Castrol Awards for Cricketing Excellence’ for Indian cricketers 11 years ago, Castrol has taken another step with the inauguration of the Castrol Asian Cricket Awards.

These awards will be given to Asia's best cricketers on a biennial basis in all three forms of the game– Test cricket, One-Day cricket and T20 Internationals. The inauguration ceremony was held in Karachi, Pakistan on 27th June 2008. Also the trophy of this awards in inaugurated in the presence of ambassadors for the Castrol Asian Cricket Awards - Rahul Dravid, Sanath Jayasuriya and Wasim Akram.

The Castrol officials had said that the awards have been created only for keeping South Asia’s status as cricket’s hub in terms of commercial importance, talent search, popularity of the game which at the most extreme stage where people are just crazy about the game and the players.

The awards has its own simple point system called the Castrol Performance Index to judge and select the players in different categories. The categories to which the awards will be given every year are:
  • Castrol Asian Cricketer of the Year (Overall)
  • Castrol Asian Batsman of the Year (Overall)
  • Castrol Asian Bowler of the Year (Overall)
  • Castrol Asian Fielder of the Year (Overall)
  • Castrol Asian Test Batsman of the Year
  • Castrol Asian Test Bowler of the Year
  • Castrol Asian ODI Batsman of the Year
  • Castrol Asian ODI Bowler of the Year
  • Castrol Asian Twenty20 Batsman of the Year
  • Castrol Asian Twenty20 Bowler of the Year    
The first Castrol Asian Cricket Awards ceremony was held in Karachi, Pakistan this year. The awards were given for the year 2007 performances. Sourav Ganguly, “The Prince of Kolkata” got the Asian Cricketer of the Year Award. Indian Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar was awarded the Asian ODI cricketer of the Year.

India’s Gautam Gambhir and Pakistan’s Umar Gul were declared the best Asian T20 batsman and bowler respectively. Yuvraj Singh got a special award for hitting six sixes in an over in the ICC T20 World Cup. The overall Castrol Asian Bowler of the Year Award was given to Muthiah Muralitharan. Sri Lankan wicket keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara was chosen as the best Test Batsman of the year. Farveez Maharoof was chosen as the best ODI Bowler.

Pakistan’s wicket keeper Kamran Akmal received Castrol Asian Fielder of the Year award. The legendary cricketer of Pakistan Hanif Mohhmmad got a Lifetime Achievement award. The Castrol Pakistan Awards for Cricketing Excellence for performances by Pakistani cricketers were also given. Shoaib Malik has got the Castrol Pakistan Cricketer of the Year award. Ahmad Shezad was declared as the Castrol Pakistan Junior Cricketer of the Year.
