Tides of fortunes indeed have an interesting cycle, when you are pushed into the corner; suddenly you would find that the fortune has started smiling on your face. Mohammed Asif is one such player, who might have lost the hope that he would ever be able to hold the cherry in his hand and test the mettle of the player at the other end, but somebody up there has been benevolent and indeed seems to have faith in his innocence.

As the season of spring is giving place to summers in the sub-continent, summer of discontent for Asif has turned into a season of spring. A man who was walking with a noose around his neck of having resorted to dope for enhancing his performance has not only received his dues from the Indian Premier League (IPL), in all probability Pakistan Cricket Board may not award a harsh penalty to him. An inquiry committee had been set to look into the details of the reasons for his detention of a period of 19 days in Dubai. According to the sources the PCB officials are veneering around to the view of taking a lenient stand against him for possession of 0.24 gram of cocaine.

Some of the members of the inquiry committee are of the view that a financial penalty on Asif would convey the message. They are having this view on account of the fact that Asif has not yet submitted any documents from the authorities in Dubai confirming that he can travel to Dubai. The senior officials of the PCB also are of the view that Asif's case needs to be viewed sympathetically.

Wasim Bari, former Pakistan wicketkeeper and presently the PCB Director, Human Resources, who is heading the Inquiry Committee, is expected to give its report to the board Chairman Ejaz Butt on the Dubai detention case later this week. The last bowl that he had bowled was in July 2008, and after that he is serving a ban of 12 months. The IPL drugs inquiry tribunal for failing a dope test last year during the IPL tournament in its inaugural season imposed the ban on him.

The PCB suspended Asif from all forms of game of cricket in July, after the IPL dope committee awarded the punishment to him. He has also got his balance payment from his earlier franchisee in the IPL, Delhi Daredevils.
