David Morgan, the Chairman of England and Wales Cricket Board will take over from Ray Mali, the acting president from South Africa next year.

Ray Mali was appointed as the acting president of ICC after the untimely death of the former ICC President Percy Sonn in May this year. Ray Mali had to step down from his post as the President of CSA after he accepted the job of ICC’s acting president.

There were two main contenders for the job, David Morgan of England and Sharad Pawar, the president of BCCI whose nomination was backed by Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. These two met after they both secured the same number of votes in the ICC governance committee meeting to decide who. Amongst them should take over Ray Mali next year.  Ending intense speculation as to which one of the two will be the next president, they reportedly reached to a conclusion where both would share the offices for an equal duration of two years with Morgan going first and Pawar taking over in 2010, just in time when the 2011 World Cup will be organized in the sub-continent.

This has been seen as a positive sign by many, considering the criticism of ICC on their handling of recent events like the 2007 World Cup and the Zimbabwe issue. This has been seen as a sign of the stability within cricket’s main governing body.

Morgan, 63 took over as the Chairman of England and Wales from Lord MacLaurin in January 2003, prior to which he was the Chairman of Glamorgan Cricket County Club. He was seen as a “pair of safe hands” to take over the job considering his vast experience in this field and his deep understanding of the game. His views on the Zimbabwe cricket crisis attracted heavy criticism from the cricket world.
