As the coach of the Indian cricket team basks in the glory of a historic win in Kiwi land, others in his family may also soon have reason to celebrate. Gary Kirsten’s half brothers Peter and Andy Kirsten are currently the coaching the Kenyan cricket team as batting coach and head coach respectively. The latter two Kirstens will be looking to have the Kenyan team qualify for the ICC world cup, the qualifiers from which are currently ongoing. Kenya are currently undergoing the qualifiers after earning automatic berths in the previous two world cups and even reaching the semi final in the last world cup.
According to his half brother Andy Kirsten, some of Gary Kirsten’s big strengths is the ability to adapt; be it to situations, cultures or personalities and his good people skills. If of course helps that he is working with some of the most talented cricket players in international cricket today. His achievement has been to get his players to believe in him and to accept his methods; and they have responded to this magnificently according to Andy. Further the coaching styles of Gary is very different from that of Peter who admits to being an ‘in your face’ kind of coach while Gary is more calm. Gary does have the benefits of working with better quality players, however his brother admitted that he did come up with good tips and training methods from time to time. With Gary Kirsten’s coaching techniques being much admired in the cricket news, another cricket rumour about the Indian coach that is doing the rounds is that he may be the successor to Peter Moores as the English cricket team coach. A leading English daily reported that Gary Kirsten was "potential front-runner" to succeed Peter Moores ahead of the Ashes against Australia. This however has been negated by the Indian coach who was reported in the cricket news as having stated categorically that he was not a candidate for the job. So far Kirsten’s tenure with the Indian cricket teams has been successful and marked by cordial relations with the skipper and the players of the team who have performed very well under his grooming and responded very well to his tutelage.
